Children and young people are invited this weekend to the #SigurantaOnline (Online Safety) stand at Bucharest Gaming Week, which takes place at the Palace of Parliament on Saturday and Sunday, with the aim of learning how to surf the Internet safely, informs the National Cyber Security Directorate (DNSC), in a press release sent to AGERPRES on Friday.

"With the motto "Fii Cool, nu Credool!" [Be Cool not a Fool], those visiting the #SigurantaOnline stand will be taught how to safely surf the Internet, be cautious and not believe everything that is being circulated in the virtual environment. Thus, in order to avoid dangers, young users are encouraged not to be gullible about the information they encounter on the Internet and to exercise both vigilance and reticence, especially when they are asked to provide sensitive data online. At the #SigurantaOnline stand, young people will meet gamers Gannicus96 and iFoxify and can test their resilience to online dangers through a digital quiz," the source said.

In addition, young people can take part in an interactive digital and financial literacy competition to demonstrate their ability to react correctly to threats and acquire the necessary information to protect themselves online.

The winners will receive various prizes offered by the initiators of the awareness project.

According to the DNSC, the four key messages for children and young people that will be conveyed to the Bucharest Gaming Week audience will be: "Avoid providing card details on demand"; "Check suspicious links with a security solution before clicking"; "Use strong, complex, distinct passwords for each account and, where possible, multi-factor authentication"; "Never provide personal, sensitive or especially financial data to strangers online."

The Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) reports rank Romania among the European countries with the best and fastest internet connections, but with a low level of digital literacy, where 27.73% of Romanians had basic digital skills in 2023, compared to the European Union (EU) average of 55.56%.

The national digital education and cybercrime prevention project #SigurantaOnline is initiated by DNSC, the Romanian Police and the Romanian Association of Banks (ARB), together with the Swiss Embassy to Romania, Swiss WebAcademy and Attack Simulator.

The initiative aims to offer the best practices of cyber security, by accessing the platform sigurantaonline.ro, to prevent young people and children from becoming victims of computer fraud, child pornography or malware attacks.
